Year 12 student Charlize Zmuda was killed in a shark attack on Monday at Bribie Island, in Queensland. “When I got the tragic news yesterday, I was extremely gutted,” her father Steve Zmuda said. “But something that my wife and I want to say is we don’t want people to stop coming to the beach and enjoying our beach.”

Hundreds of people have held a heartbreaking vigil for 17-year-old Charlize Zmuda on the same beach where she was killed by a shark.

A female has died in a suspected shark attack at Bribie Island, north of Brisbane. Paramedics from the Queensland Ambulance Service were called to Woorim Beach shortly before 5pm. It is understood she received injuries to her upper body while swimming on the south-east end of the island.

Her mother, Renee Zmuda, said she wanted Charlize to be remembered for her “incredible life”, not the awful way it was cut short. “Charlize was loved by many and was such a shining light who truly touched the lives of everyone she met,” she said in a statement
