The government has decided to demolish Grenfell Tower, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner told a meeting with bereaved relatives and survivors, the BBC understands.Seventy two people died when the tower block in west London caught fire in June 2017.

Grenfell campaigners say they have been told by the deputy prime minister that the tower block will be demolished.

A spokesperson for Grenfell Next of Kin, a group representing some bereaved families, said Rayner had “announced the decision the tower will have to be carefully deconstructed”. Seventy-two people died in the fire which took place on 14 June, 2017.

The final report of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, published in September, concluded the disaster was the result of “decades of failure” by government and the construction industry to act on the dangers of flammable materials on high-rise buildings.

But Grenfell United, which represents some of the bereaved and survivors of the June 2017 fire, claimed the voices of many loved ones had been ignored. They said they had repeatedly urged housing secretaries over the years to "consult the bereaved and survivors meaningfully before reaching a decision on the tower".
