A tsunami advisory was downgraded to a watch for Southern California coastlines after little activity was seen overnight, but weather experts warned that fluctuations in the tide could continue throughout Wednesday, July 30, following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia.

Officials in Hawaii said the risk of a major tsunami had passed. The first waves began hitting the U.S. West Coast after an 8.8-magnitude quake off Russia’s coast put a swath of Pacific nations on alert.

Japan's meteorological agency warned that a tsunami about 1 meter (3 feet) high was expected to reach Hokkaido in the north around 10:00 a.m., local time, with waves arriving later in the day along parts of eastern Honshu and Kyushu in the south.
