Area residents needing shelter from the extreme cold and snow this week are encouraged to call the 211 Texas/United Way HELPLINE to find the nearest warming center.

City and county officials in Houston and surrounding areas, along with nonprofit organizations, are opening shelters and warming centers to provide residents a respite from the cold.

In preparation for another round of cold weather, Houston opened 10 warming centers Sunday night with some Harris County precincts and Fort Bend County officials also announcing warming centers.
