He formed his own team for a while, Martin Donnelly Racing, and still has close links with Lotus. He has been a driver steward at F1 races in Korea, Canada and Abu Dhabi.

Donnelly got his first big break in F1 with Arrows in 1989. Donnelly had raced in F2000, British Formula 3, and in International F3000, winning the Macau Grand Prix and setting up his entry into F1.
