The flag was reportedly hung over the side of El Capitan as a sign of protest by Yosemite employees concerned about the recent downsizing carried out as part of the Trump administration’s cost-cutting initiatives.

A group of climbers, some who used to work for the Park Service, intended to raise awareness about how recent federal job cuts could threaten the country’s parks.

Organizers said the inverted flag, historically used as a sign of distress, was meant to draw attention to the Trump administration’s cuts to the National Park Service.
